Abstract
The increasing global energy demand and environmental pollution with the use of fossil fuels resources are the most significant issues facing humanity. Due to the depleting reserves of fossil fuels and increasing environmental pollution, producing more energy using renewable sources is absolutely required. Nowadays, suitable energy storage systems and green energy production are more relevant for environmental protection and fossil fuels replacement than ever. In this respect, heterogeneous photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting are considered as the most exciting and promising ways to directly harvest and convert renewable solar energy for generating sustainable green energy and eliminating organic pollutants. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes (TiNT) are ones of the most promising photocatalysts. However, some drawbacks hinder their applications. Much efforts have so been devoted to the development of TiNT visible-light harvesting photocatalysts with a low charge carrier recombination. In the framework of this thesis, TiNTelectrode was modified through facet engineering (crystal orientation with predominant exposed {001} facets)and heterojunction engineering (coupling with graphene nanosheets, α-Fe2O3 particles and plasmonic platinum nanoparticles).
