| dc.description.abstract | This research paper explores the themes of hegemony and counter-hegemony within two dystopian novels, George Orwell’s 1984 and Boualem Sansal’s 2084, relying on the socio- political theories of Antonio Gramsci. Our study investigates the dynamics of power and control in these literary works. We aim to examine the ways in which the ruling classes establish and maintain hegemonic structures through non-coercive means, while also shedding light on the strategies of resistance and subversion employed by the marginalized. This study has revealed that 1984 and 2084 portray the ways the totalitarian systems exert control over the masses like surveillance, propaganda and distortion of historical events. Our study has also revealed that the marginalized groups in the two novels developed strategies for subversion through identifying instances of intellectual and cultural resistance that emerge from the margins of society through collective action of subaltern groups. | |
